Plumber in Carshalton

MTEX Services is a plumbing, heating and bathroom business based in Carshalton. Carshalton is in the London Borough of Sutton, south London. The postcode is SM5, covering Carshalton, Carshalton Beeches and The Wrythe. It is not in Surrey.

SM5 and the streets next door

Most of our Carshalton work is in SM5. Next door we cover Sutton, Cheam, Wallington, Beddington and Hackbridge. Hackbridge is SM6, on Carshalton’s northern edge.

The areas we cover also include other south London districts, and a few towns that really are in Surrey, such as Banstead and Epsom. If you are on the edge of that list, call and we will say whether we can take the job.

The houses, and the problems they cause

Around the ponds and the old village there are Victorian and Edwardian terraces and cottages, often with a bathroom added later and pipes altered more than once. Carshalton Beeches and the houses towards Oaks Park are larger early twentieth-century homes, with room for a cylinder. The Wrythe and the Carshalton side of St Helier are interwar houses, many of them extended since. Hackbridge, just outside SM5, mixes older houses with newer flats.

In a terrace there is rarely a sensible place for a cylinder, so a combination boiler is the usual choice. A larger house is more likely to still have a cylinder. An extension or a second bathroom can leave the far radiators lukewarm if the original pipes were left as they were. We look at the system that is there before suggesting a repair or a new boiler.

Hard water

The tap water in Carshalton, and across Sutton, is hard. Scale shows in the kettle and on the shower, and it settles inside a boiler in the same way. On a combi it coats the plate that heats the hot water: the boiler gets noisy, the flow drops, and the heating uses more gas. It is also rough on taps and on the immersion heater in a cylinder. A service is when that should be spotted, before a cold morning when the boiler locks out.

What we do in Carshalton

We repair leaks, taps, toilets and burst pipes, service gas boilers, and fix heating, radiators and failed cylinders. We also plan and fit bathrooms. The call-out price we publish is on the prices page. For a larger job we look first, then quote.

Gas work is carried out under Gas Safe registration 618835. Routine hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and Saturday, 9am to 1pm. Outside those hours there is a 24-hour emergency call-out for a serious leak, no heating, or a boiler that has shut down. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before you call us.

Heat pumps and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

A mid-terrace with nowhere for a cylinder, and nowhere sensible for an outdoor unit, is often a poor fit for an air source heat pump. A larger house with room for a cylinder is more realistic, though the radiators still need checking, because a heat pump runs cooler than a gas boiler. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can contribute £7,500 towards an air source heat pump in England. It does not pay for a new gas boiler.

MTEX is qualified to install air source heat pumps. MTEX is not MCS-certified. An MCS umbrella scheme handles the MCS certification and the grant paperwork. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme page sets out what is covered and what is not.

Questions we are often asked

Is Carshalton in Surrey?

No. Carshalton is in the London Borough of Sutton, south London, in postcode SM5. Banstead, Epsom and Ewell are nearby, and they are in Surrey. We work in both.

Which postcodes do you cover from Carshalton?

SM5 is the home postcode. We regularly work in Sutton (SM1, SM2 and SM3) and in Wallington, Beddington and Hackbridge (SM6). Call if you are just outside those districts and we will tell you if we can take the job.

Do you offer an emergency plumber in Carshalton?

Yes. Booked work is Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and Saturday, 9am to 1pm. Outside those hours there is an emergency call-out for serious leaks, loss of heating and boiler breakdowns.

Can I get a grant to replace my gas boiler?

Not through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. That grant is for a heat pump, not for a like-for-like gas boiler. If a heat pump is a realistic option for the house we will say so, and we will also say if it is not.

Are your engineers Gas Safe registered?

Yes. Gas Safe registration number 618835 covers gas boiler servicing, gas repairs and other domestic gas work. Heat pump certification is separate. MTEX is not MCS-certified. An MCS umbrella scheme handles that certification and the grant paperwork.
